The Rawyl region currently includes 316 routes of all levels (from 4 to 9a+). There are 5 main sectors in the Barrage region, divided into different zones.

It takes around twenty minutes to get there via the Rawyl road from the village of St-Romain to the dam. During the summer season, the site is served by post buses and by the shuttle organised by the tourist office.

  • Tseuzier dam at 1,700 metres, various exposures
  • Armeillon at 1'900 metres, west-facing
  • Six des Eaux Froides, 300-metre routes, east-facing
  • Sex des Molettes, 150-metre routes, west-facing
  • Mondralèche, routes from levels 4 to 7a

There are also two other sectors, Les Audannes and Les Andins. The first is half an hour from the hut and offers 40 routes between 4 and 8a at an altitude of 2,500 metres. The second, Les Andins, is on the way to the hut from Les Rousses. 7 routes are scattered around various boulders more or less close to the footpath.

As you can see, Rawyl is a climbing paradise in summer, when it's too hot to enjoy the pleasures of lower-altitude climbing.

For more information, please visit Jean-Marie Porcellana's 8abloc website and Daniel Blanc's climbing guide "Escalade en Valais Central". The latter is available from the Tourist Office for CHF 40.-.
