Hérens Cows

Cow contest

The Hérens race

The rearing of the Hérens race of cow is at the origin of one of Valais’ most unusual customs:  “Queen cow” fights. There is a hierarchy among these black, thickset cows.   The Queen guides the herd and it is quite natural for these animals to fight each other to decide which one is to be the Queen. These fights are never dangerous but provoke immense excitement among spectators.  More than 10,000 people watch the cantonal final event. The first fights take place at inalpe (mid-June). The cows return to the plain at mid-September; which is désalpe
